These are fire fueled by solid material such as coal, wood, paper, straw etc (Class A) and by flammable liquids such as fats, solvents, paints etc (Class B).

Working in a similar way to the water fire extinguisher, foam fire extinguishers help to reduce the oxygen supply to burning fuel and cool it. Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) extinguishers are also effective on flammable liquids, making the extinguishers a good all-rounder.  A 6 litre foam fire extinguisher has a better fire rating than a 9 litre water and is only two thirds of the weight.

 

Although all foam fire extinguishers are fitted with a dielectrical nozzle to help reduce electricity current if the extinguisher is used on an electrical item, the extinguishers should not be puposely used on fires involving electrical equipment / current.
