Working in a similar way to the water fire extinguisher, foam fire extinguishers help to reduce the oxygen supply to burning fuel and cool it. Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) extinguishers are also effective on flammable liquids, making the extinguishers a good all-rounder. A 6 litre foam fire extinguisher has a better fire rating than a 9 litre water and is only two thirds of the weight.
Although all foam fire extinguishers are fitted with a dielectric nozzle to help reduce electricity current if the extinguisher is used on an electrical item, the extinguishers should not be purposely used on fires involving electrical equipment / current. |
