When tackling fires fuelled by large volumes of burning oil, there is only one type of extinguisher suitable.  Wet chemical fire extinguishers, unlike other types of media,  can not only be applied without causing the burning fuel to be splashed but they also apply a thick soapy foam that soaks into the burning fuel and stops re-ignition.

With wet chemical extinguishers, the units are fitted with a lance to help the user keep a safe distance away from the fire but get the extinguisher media close to the fuel of the fire, putting it out more effectively.
