ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers Information from NFEX

Dry powder fire extinguishers are arguably the most versatile type of fire extinguisher.  They are capable of extinguishing fire classes, A, B ,C (Flammable solids, liquids and gasses) and electrical fires and are often referred to multi - purpose or ABC powder fire extinguishers. Specialist dry powder extinguishers can also fight metal fires (class D) and may be required in workplaces where magnesium, aluminium, lithium and sodium fuelled fire risks are present.

Portable ABC dry powder extinguishers are available in 1kg, 2kg, 4kg, 6kg and 9kg sizes and larger wheeled units are also available. Smaller powder fire extinguishers are mostly used to protect smaller workshops, vehicles, caravans and the home, while larger units may be found in airports, flammable liquid storage facilities and on vehicles and fuel tankers, to cover ADR fire risks.

Main application of Dry powder Fire Extinguishers

Their multi-purpose nature is their greatest advantage.  Powder extinguishers also have the advantage of a fast flame knockdown and are also highly efficient when used against running fuel fires.

Limitations of a Dry Powder Extinguiisher

Powder extinguishers work by introducing a chemical interference with the combustion process. As they do not cool the flames - like a water or foam extinguisher would – there can be a risk of re-ignition.

When discharged, the powder can spread over a large area leaving a residue on carpets and furnishings and potentially damaging computers, food equipment and machinery. For this reason, recent updates to British Standards BS5306 part 8 suggest they should only be specified after careful risk assessment or where a specific gas risk is present as they are the only fire extinguisher to cover gas risks.

Nationwide fire extinguishers stock a wide range of dry powder extinguishers ranging from 1kg, 2kg, 4kg, 6kg and 9kg in our kitemarked, budget powerx collection, in addition to a variety of sizes in the ultrafire range. We sell 1kg and 2kg automatic powder fire extinguishers which are mainly used to protect marine or automotive environments. Our specialist units complete the range as we stock a 233B rated Monnex powder for industrial applications as well as a specialist metal (class D) fire extinguisher for flammable metal risks.

We also have stainless steel dry powder fire extinguishers for settings which require extinguishers to be more aesthetically pleasing, or for when a stainless steel extinguisher body may be required.  Nationwide fire extinguishers’ stainless steel range is CE Marked, and like all extinguishers stocked by Nationwide, come with a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty. Please check individual product descriptions for full details.
