Fire extinguisher signs are not intended to replace staff fire training but do act as a quick reference guide for emergency use of extinguishers.
The term fire extinguisher signs covers multiple types of fire safety sign. ‘Fire point signs’ and ‘fire alarm call point’ signs are types of fire fighting sign. The British standard for Fire fighting signs is that they should be over 50% red and square or rectangular shaped with a white pictogram.
Green fire exit signs cover emergency fire escape information, they are also square or rectangular shaped with a white pictogram on a green background. These signs can be purchased in a white or photo luminescent ‘glow in the dark’ finish. The most widely used type of fire extinguisher signs are fire extinguisher ID signs. These fire extinguisher signs should be displayed above each fire extinguisher to inform the reader what the fire extinguisher in question can and can not safely be used on. Water fire extinguisher signs, for example, tell the user that a water fire extinguisher can be used on flammable solid fires such as wood, paper and fabric fires, and makes the reader aware that it should not be used on electrical fires, flammable liquid fires and flammable metal fires. For ease of application, this type, and all other types of fire extinguisher signs are available in a self adhesive finish. Self adhesive fire extinguisher signs are suitable only for smooth walls however. If this type of sign is not suitable for your building, you could get fire extinguisher ID signs in a rigid plastic white or photo luminescent finish. These types can be used again if for example, you redecorate. We recommend adhering with silicone adhesive.
Advice on the use of fire extinguisher signs can be obtained from your authority for fire safety. You should ensure that all fire safety signs and fire extinguisher signs comply with current regulations. All signs supplied by Nationwide fire Extinguishers are to current British and European Standards Ensure all text or word signs are replaced with pictogram signs and text where necessary. All employees should be aware of the implication of the fire extinguisher signs displayed through fire safety and extinguisher training.
