Selecting the Correct Fire Extinguishers For The Work Area.

Observe and identify the types of materials in the area fire extinguishers are to be used in.

Class A: SOLIDS such as paper, wood, plastic etc.

Class B: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS such as paraffin, petrol, oil etc.

Class C: FLAMMABLE GASES such as propane, butane, methane etc.

Class D: METALS such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium etc.

Class E: Fires involving ELECTRICAL APPARATUS

Class F: Cooking OIL & FAT etc

Types of fire extinguisher:

Water Fire Extinguishers

Is the cheapest and most widely used water fire extinguishers. This can be used for Class A fires. But is ‘Not’ suitable for Class B Liquid fires, or fires where electric is involved. Colour Coding, RED.

Foam Fire Extinguishers

This type is more expensive than water extinguishers but Foam Fire Extinguishers can be used for Classes A & B Fires. We would not recommend Foam extinguishers for fires involving electricity, although a foam extinguisher is safer than water if sprayed onto live electrical equipment. Colour Coding ,CREAM.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Named a ‘multi-purpose’ dry powder fire extinguisher, to be used on classes A, B & C fires. Best for running liquid fires (Class B). Will efficiently extinguish Class C gas fires, Never USE TO EXTINGUISH A GAS IGNITED FIRE UNLESS YOUR FIRST ISOLATING THE GAS SUPPLY. Colour Coding, BLUE.

CO2 Fire Extinguishers

Also named a Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher, CO2 fire extinguishers are ideal for electrical equipment fires, and can also be used to extinguish class B liquid fires. Colour Coding , BLACK.

Wet chemical Fire Extinguishers

This is a specialist fire extinguisher. A wet chemical fire extinguisher is designed to be used on all class F fires.

For Metal Fires

Devised as a specialist fire extinguisher, this type can used on metal fires such as sodium, lithium, manganese and aluminum Class D fires.
